There are five steps in the family dispute resolution process offered by ResolveBC. The average time to complete the process is 3 months. The process is part of family package that includes assessment, coaching, mediation, drafting, and signing. The average time it takes to complete this process is three months.

Step 1: Individual Assessment Interviews (1 hour)

1-1 assessment interviews include screening for violence (FLA, s.8), provision of information about the Family Law Act and the Divorce Act, an overview of the mediation process, and an opportunity for participants to give their perspective on the dynamics of the conflict.

Step 2: Individual Coaching Meetings (1 hr / session)

Prior to mediation, each participant engages in one or multiple coaching meetings to better prepare them for mediation. They include goal clarification, communication work, feedback, and self-reflection.

Step 3: Mediation (2 hr / session)

Mediation involves the use of a facilitator who assists with problem solving. Mediation sessions are typically two hours in length, and may be conducted in virtual, shuttle, or in-person formats.  Participants may engage in one or multiple mediation sessions.

Step 4: Drafting and Review

After each mediation session, a ResolveBC facilitator will send participants a draft document with their agreements to date. Before any document is signed, participants have an opportunity to review it with a lawyer.

Step 5: Signing

Once all of the details in the draft agreements are confirmed by all participants, a signing of the documents is arranged.
